What Can a Slidell Lactation Consultant Help With?

We assist moms all throughout the Northshore with a range of lactation-related challenges. Many women contact us with pain problems, and we are able to help them pinpoint the source of the discomfort and establish a treatment plan. What is an IBCLC?

An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant® (IBCLC®) is a healthcare professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding and lactation. An IBCLC is a priceless resource to breastfeeding families, reassuring you when breastfeeding and lactation are going well, and providing information and support to help prevent and manage common concerns. IBCLCs help with:
  • Prenatal counseling about the factors that may affect breastfeeding and lactation
  • Basic position and latch of the infant
  • Information about practices that promote successful breastfeeding and lactation
  • Preventing and managing common concerns such as poor latch, inadequate milk transfer or supply, nipple or breast pain, and calming a fussy baby
  • Milk expression and storage for parents who must be separated from their babies
  • Strategies for breastfeeding and lactation after returning to work
  • Breastfeeding and lactation in challenging situations, such as feeding twins or triplets, a premature or sick infant, or infants in special medical situations

What do you need to know before hiring a lactation consultant?

What to Expect in Your Initial Consultation?

We'll talk to you about your health and medical history, including medications. This is important because some medicines can interfere with breastfeeding. We will also help you determine when it's time to call the lactation consultant. If we think that a problem exists, we will recommend other resources such as your doctor or present you with solutions from our IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant).
During your consultation, we will assess your baby's latch and positioning in order to determine if they are feeding properly and getting enough milk. We'll also take a look at your breasts and nipples to see what kind of damage may have been done during breastfeeding, as well as evaluate the strength of your milk flow.

Prenatal Lactation Consultations

Consider scheduling a prenatal appointment if you are expecting, and we can assist you with any difficulties you may anticipate. Our staff is committed to assisting expectant moms throughout the state of Louisiana in preparing for breastfeeding and seamlessly integrating lactation preparation into their birthing plan. We'll discuss your dietary needs, how to be well-prepared, and how to create a schedule.
We offer service to mothers throughout the Northshore, including in Slidell, Mandeville, Covington, and Lacombe. Schedule your appointment today by calling 254-228-3744 or contact us online to learn more about our lactation services. We are available 24/7!

Frequently asked Questions

What does a lactation consultant help with?
The title IBCLC refers to a lactation expert who has completed the required education and training. These nurses assess and treat both minor and serious nursing issues. They usually aid parents in learning how to enhance milk production, choose the best nursing posture, and cope with sore nipples.
Can a lactation consultant prescribe?
Most lactation consultants do not have the qualifications to prescribe medications or other treatments. However, they may refer mothers to their primary care providers for medication management if needed. If you are struggling with breastfeeding and want to speak with a specialist about your options, it is best to consult an IBCLC in your area. These professionals will work with you to create a breastfeeding plan that is tailored to your individual needs.
Can a lactation consultant help with pumping?
Pumping can be a difficult and time-consuming task, but a lactation consultant can teach you how to do it effectively. They can also help you troubleshoot any issues you may have with your pump, as well as provide guidance on how often to pump and how much breast milk to store.
How do you breastfeed a newborn baby?
There is no "right" way to breastfeed a newborn baby, as each mother and baby may have different needs and preferences. Some of the key steps in breastfeeding a newborn baby include finding a comfortable nursing position, ensuring that your baby has a good latch, and taking note of any latching or feeding issues that may arise. It can also be helpful to speak with a lactation consultant or other healthcare professional in order to get support and guidance as you begin this exciting new chapter.
How long does the average mom breastfeed?
Typically, the average mother solely breastfeeds for the first six months of her child's life, at which time she begins to add other foods while continuing to breastfeed for 2 years or longer. After six months of age, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advocates exclusive breastfeeding until the baby reaches one year old.
